Education

Academics challenge uncritical AI adoption in universities

Academics challenge uncritical AI adoption in universities

ZenodoZenodo·Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia - Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece, we expound on why universities must take their role seriously to a) counter the technology industry's marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to relevant work to further inform our colleagues.

Signals:

  • Universities are uncritically adopting AI technologies without proper evaluation or consent from faculty and students.
  • Academic institutions risk compromising critical thinking, expertise, and scientific integrity through hasty AI implementation.
  • Higher education must actively counter technology industry marketing and protect academic freedom from corporate influence.

Researchers achieve truly deterministic LLM inference results

Researchers achieve truly deterministic LLM inference results

Thinking Machines LabThinking Machines Lab·10 September 2025·Defeating Nondeterminism in LLM Inference - Thinking Machines Lab - Reproducibility is a bedrock of scientific progress. However, it’s remarkably difficult to get reproducible results out of large language models. For example, you might observe that asking ChatGPT the same question multiple times provides different results. This by itself is not surprising, since getting a result from a language model involves “sampling”, a process that converts the language model’s output into a probability distribution and probabilistically selects a token. What might be more surprising is that even when we adjust the temperature down to 0This means that the LLM always chooses the highest probability token, which is called greedy sampling. (thus making the sampling theoretically deterministic), LLM APIs are still not deterministic in practice (see past discussions here, here, or here). Even when running inference on your own hardware with an OSS inference library like vLLM or SGLang, sampling still isn’t deterministic (see here or here).

Signals:

  • LLM inference nondeterminism stems from batch-size variations, not floating-point concurrency issues.
  • Batch-invariant kernels enable truly reproducible AI results for scientific and regulatory compliance.
  • Deterministic inference unlocks true on-policy reinforcement learning, improving model training effectiveness.

Scientists engineer plants to double carbon uptake

Scientists engineer plants to double carbon uptake

Phys.orgPhys.org·15 September 2025·Scientists engineer plants to double carbon uptake ability and produce more seeds and lipids - Typically, plants rely on the Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) cycle to convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to usable organic matter for growth. Although this cycle is the main pathway for carbon fixation in all plants on Earth, it is surprisingly inefficient—losing one third of carbon in the cycle when synthesizing the molecule acetyl–coenzyme A (CoA) to generate lipids, phytohormones, and metabolites. Plants also lose carbon during photorespiration, which limits their growth. This is largely due to the inefficiency of an enzyme called RuBisCO.
